The storm outside blew against the home’s structure. Elija looked outside from the dining room windows, watching leafs and rain soar pass the glassy view of the window. His mother was cooking one of the boy’s favorite dishes: Orange chicken with white rice and veggies. She set his plate on the table as she did the same for her side. They both ate quietly as they heard the wind howl like a dastardly wolf to a full moon. Elija refused to make eye-contact with her due to her latest news.

“Elija, sweety-” She cried softly. “Don’t be sad that i’m leaving. You know i’ll be back.”

The boy stayed quiet and continued eating.

“This isn’t my choice, if i don’t head to New York for that interview then i won’t get my job,” his mother pleaded.

“I know...” Elija cried, “I...I just don’t want you to leave me here alone.” Elija didn’t have many friends while he lived in his new home here in Luna-Ville.

His mother looked at him with watery eyes, “Don’t worry, my dear. Ms. Henderson promised to look after you while i’m in New York. How’s that sound?”

“She’s not a mean lady, right?” Elija looked worried, never hearing this Ms. Henderson person before. His mother chuckled, “It’ll be fine dear, she’ll visit the house once and a while, don’t worry, she don’t replace me or anything. Now, finish your food and get ready for bed, i have a gift for you while i’m away.”

Elija did so, he gulped his last piece of rice, rinsed the bowl, and trotted upstairs to his room. He slipped off his t-shirt and pants and wore his casual sleepwear of overused t-shirts and pajamas. He brushed his teeth, thinking about the gift.

His mother sat on his bed, “Elija, i’ll be waiting.” Elija scrubbed his teeth faster, spat out the paste, and ran down the hall to his bedroom. He sat next to his mother, and noticed something in her hand. “Now, ready?” She asked. Elija gave a gentle nod, she smiled, “Good, now close your eyes.” The boy did so and closed them as well as cover them with his palms. His mother got off the bed and took out the gift. “Open your eyes,” she whispered. Elija did so and gaped his mouth in astonishment: In his mother’s hands was a rather large doll. The doll represented the dragon statue of the forest. “Do you like it?” His mother smiled. Elija held the big plush in his hands and comforted it with a hug. “It took me a while to make it, but it’s all worth it. While i’m gone, the two dragons will protect you with their spirits...okay?” She rubbed the boy’s soft head of hair. Elija nodded with a little sound of “Mhm”.

Suddenly, the phone rang. His mother rubbed his cheek and left the room. She answered the phone quickly; her conversation involved the ship’s depature was tomorrow morning. “No way!” She yelled at whoever revealed her the news, “Great...i have to leave tonight then! Okay--alright--FINE!” She slammed the phone back onto the reciever and breathes slowly. “Mommy has to leave tonight,” she returned to her happy self for Elija.

And so she -packed her things and put on her best suit for the travel. Elija was in bed, cuddling with the big dragon plush. She turned on the lamp light and came in, “Ms. Henderson will be here shortly. I’ll let her sleep in my room tonight. Please be good while i’m gone, and i’ll be sure to return safe and sound, okay?” She smiled and kissed the boy’s forehead. “Love you, my son. Bye!” She shut the lights off of his room and headed outside to a cab-driver. Elija watched the yellow car wait for his mom and then drove off with her waving out the window to him. Ms. Henderson walked upstairs and into Elija’s mom’s room. She was shy of meeting the boy so she decided to talk to him in the morning.

Elija held onto his doll and slept quietly.

In the forceful winds, the scarf on the one of the dragon’s necks was slipping thread by thread. It finally blew off as it soared pass the trees. It finally hit the bedroom window of Elija’s room and slipped through the small crack that was left open for some air. it gently flew onto the boy’s bed and touched the plush. The plush itself made a soft glow. It made a purring sound, Elija, still sleeping, slept soundly as the plush purred a bit, feeling freedom from where it was trapped.
